Socrates Himself Is Particularly Missed

You must know by now how deeply entertained I can be by all the weird and wonderful stuff available on the web, so it will come as no surprise to find that this week I’ve been testing out all manner of personality-typing guff and have found the odd new wheeze or two.
First of all, there’s classic Western astrology, which is fabulous for learning more about the deeper drives that underpin the personality. By the way, I don’t mean sun-sign astrology – that had its heyday in the decade that style forgot and hasn’t been revived in any meaningful way ever since, for very good reasons. It’s such a tiny part of the overall picture of a personalised astrological chart that it’s virtually meaningless. It may be fun to swap sun signs if you’re tipsy at a 70s revival party and want to flirt outrageously, but quite frankly it’s not much use for anything else.

A proper birthchart is a map of the psyche – in potential – that can give profound clues to help you follow the best life advice any philosopher has ever given, ie Socrates’ exhortation to “know thyself”. Each of the planets represents a particular quality, eg the Moon for your emotional and instinctual self, and their placements in particular houses and signs demonstrate where in life those qualities come to the fore and how they are expressed. If you’re tempted to investigate, go to www.alabe.com/freechart/, where you can pick up a free online chart, which will give you all the planetary placements for your time of birth as well as a brief description of what theymean. If you’re interested in learning about astrology, www.astrology.com is currently offering free online lessons. I can’t vouch for the quality of them, as I’ve not given them a whirl, but you might like to test them out.

Another offer from www.astrology.com is a free sample Chinese Astrology reading, giving you some basic data on your birth chart and a mini-reading of the elements involved, eg earth, air, fire, water and metal, as well as the animals that represent the day and time you were born. Some of you may not be too impressed to find out that you’re a rat, monkey or pig, but I suspected the tigers and dragons among you will be secretly chuffed to have scored the glamour animals of the Chinese zodiac. The link for the sample chart is in the sidebar on the right, as it’s just too damn long to add here in the text and I’m not techno-savvy enough to work out how to hide it.

Finally, if you go to www.paulsadowski.com/birthday.asp, you will find out far more information than you ever needed (or wanted) to know about your birth date, including your Tree sign – go figure! – and a bit of numerology.

Now, by my calculations, that should keep you all busy until next week! According to Socrates, “the unexamined life is not worth living”, so I hope you find out something about yourself that you’d never really seen in that light before. When I did the Chinese chart, I came across an elemental analysis that was new to me that appeared to add a further dimension to understanding why I’m so communications-obsessed – it’s all the water in my chart, apparently …
